The SELAYANG SCANDAL

MDDB met Selayang councillor Gunaraj George today and handed food, bowls, pails, brooms and bleech to be brought to the Selayang pound. The bowls were sponsored by Animalcare whilst the rest came from MDDB. He was met by Animalcare and MDDB volunteer Mandy at the pound and both were horrified with what they saw.
Apparently, the pound had been spruced up after the expose but yet it was really shocking. There was a big pail of water in one of the cells and big chunks of plain white rice was thrown in one or two cells as well. This must have been a part of the spurce-up. According to Gunaraj, he was shocked to note the the dogs were only fed plain white rice.
The place was infested with ticks and according to Mandy some of the dogs must have died of tick fever. We also heard that the pound did not allow SPCA officials into its premises this morning and this is unacceptable.
They had also refused to accept the food brought to the pound by the SPCA. It shows the arrogance of the Selayang Municipal Council - why did they refuse SPCA's food when they only had white rice to feed the dogs?
Anyone claiming that the MPS is feeding the pound dogs are lying either to cover their posteriors or because they have personal agendas.
The caretaker told Mandy that there were no provision for food for the pound dogs and he sourced for food on his own initiative because he felt sorry for the dogs. Most of the time the dogs went hungry. There were also no containers and he had used some old pails to give them water. The pails are big - can the puppies reach the top for a drink?
Why didn't they allow the SPCA people in - what do they have to hide? It has also been brought to our attention that the dogs were systematically being starved to death and there may be truth in this. Gunaraj says the dogs in the Selayang pound appeared to be very weak. He and several other councillors have promised to work together with MDDB and other NGOs to put a stop to this cruelty. One of the persons responsible for this cruelty is an MPS employee named Ernie - contact number: 0136064446. She is the officer in charge of the pound. According to a very reliable sources she prevents even owners from going in to see their dogs. This woman apparently has a deep hatred for dogs that she enjoys inflicting pain on them. Call her and make it clear to this cruel civil servant, whose salary comes from our tax ringgit, that we will not tolerate her conduct.
Continue to SMS the councillors and the others as the MPS would be having ist full board meeting tomorrow morning.
More pictures and update to follow soon.

This sort of disgusting affair could be happening in most of the council dog pounds in Selangor. The only way out appears to be to stop all the councils from catching strays and keeping them in their pounds. Which means pressuring the Selangor govt to allow an independent entity to be set up, with representatives from the various animal welfare groups on the board of this entity, to do the catching of strays and keeping them.

The first thing that springs to mind is anger. Anger at the people who could let this happen, anger at the government, anger at the people who actually have the power to run this facility in a humane manner but neglect their duties.

Then, disappointment, and contempt.

Is it possible to set up a paypal account for donations? That would really be helpful for donors who do not live in Malaysia.
Thanks!

(my brother, Rabin, keeps me updated on your efforts. Thank you so much!)

Dear Shireen,

thank you so much. We don'y have a paypal account yet but one of our donors from the US mails us a cheque whenever she donates. Thanks Dr Rabin for telling your sis about us.

Regards.

I live in the US now and I am also wondering how I can donate. I am so distraught by all this, it's my first time looking at you website, and I honestly cannot stop crying right now. I will consider mailing a check, but I will also try asking my relatives in Malaysia if they could donate on my behalf. I have emailed every single person on the list, it's the least I can do for now. I thank everyone involved in this organization for your efforts and love. I will definitely join the fight to end such disgraceful, inhumane, EVIL acts, when I return home from the US at the end of this year. Meanwhile, please keep up the good work. God bless you all, and the poor animals who need it the most.

Thank you very much Stacey - its support from people such as you that keeps us going.

Hi SPS.

does that person who sends you checks from the US use a bank in the US, or does she use a check from a Malaysian bank?

Have you contacted any international organizations about this as well?

One thing you can do is draft a statement or press release that summarizes the situation, send it to them and ask for their help in exerting international pressure on the government to allow volunteers from private animal welfare groups to help at the pound and monitor conditions. The long list of contacts may not be practical, perhaps pick up to 3 or 4 of the most influential people on your list as targets for an email campaign.

Three international organizations with stature:

International Fund for Animal Welfare
http://www.ifaw.org/ifaw_international/

World Society for the Protection of Animals - Asia
http://www.wspa-international.org/whoarewe/wspaasia/default.aspx

United Animal Nations:
http://www.uan.org/

In the WSPA-Asia site, there was this statement,
http://www.wspa-international.org/whoarewe/wspaasia/Malaysian_king_signs_udaw.aspx

"November 2008: Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin has joined 8,000 members of the Malaysian public in signing the Animals Matter to Me global petition in support of Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW). "
Perhaps the king, and other major officials who signed the petition should be made aware of this horrible situation as well.

Again, thanks so much for the tireless efforts that you and your friends have given to these poor dogs. The really do deserve better.

take care,
shireen

Hi Shireen,

She sent me a cheque from a US bank account. There are several animal welfare groups on our mailing list But we will certainly pursue this further with the other orgainsations as the situation has really gotten out of hand . Thank you so much for your support. Truly appreciated.
