IT’S a never ending story for canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) given the number of stray puppies and dogs that come their way almost everyday.

MDDB rescue coordinator Irene Low said the group rescues at least two to three dogs a week that are in need of serious veterinary care.

“This is on top of the dogs and puppies in need of homes that we take in almost daily,’’ she added.

Sad state: A puppy rescued by MDDB that is in urgent need of a home.

She said MDDB currently had countless puppies and dogs that were in need of good homes.

The puppies and dogs will be put up for adoption at Jaya One shopping complex, Section 13, Petaling Jaya, this Sunday.

The event will be held from 11am to 6pm at Block NB1, which faces Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee.

According to Low, sometimes the puppies rescued come infected with canine parvovirus or distemper and they need a lot of care.

“When they come infected, we either ward them in a veterinary clinic or isolate them somewhere and pump them with medicines and highly nutritious food,’’ said Low.

She said recently a young Muslim woman had alerted a shelter when three puppies had walked into her home compound in Gombak.

However, upon learning the puppies may be euthanised due to space constraints, the woman immediately went to the shelter and removed the puppies and called MDDB, said Low.

“We took the puppies in and found that they were infected with parvovirus and we reckon the infection must have been triggered off with the stress of being moved around,’’ she said.

The puppies are currently being warded in a non-panel clinic and MDDB is worried about the cost of the veterinary care.

“They will have to be there for quite a while and we are hoping we will be able to raise the funds to pay the clinic,’’ said Low.

Low said MDDB hoped the public would come forward to help the puppies.

“They can pay directly to the clinic as well and can get the details from us at the adoption drive,’’ she said.

Low said those who would like to donate in kind to MDDB could also drop off the items at the event.

“We urgently need rice as we are running out of it due to the high number of dogs under our care currently,’’ she said.
