Appeal for Donation to Settle September 2013 Veterinary Bills

September is coming to an end, and it is the time of the month again to settle our veterinary bills so as to allow us to continue bringing severely injured and maimed dogs for medical treatments. As we rely on the public to fund our operations, we would like to appeal to your kindness and generosity to help defray the medical costs of the many dogs under our care.

RONALDO

Ronaldo
We received an SOS about a badly injured dog in Seri Kembangan about two days ago. Two rescuers brought him to us (we have named his Ronaldo), and Ronaldo is now being treated at a veterinary clinic. Vet says Ronaldo may have been attacked by other dogs as his injuries are concentrated to one side of his body. The injury nearer to the armpit is the most serious as it appears to have tunnelled inwards. There are some holes near the neck and shoulders. The injury to the paw is also quite bad with some of the bone and tendon exposed.

PUPPY TIED IN A PLASTIC BAG, LEFT HANGING ON A TREE BRANCH WITH A ROTTING TAIL

Puppy Tied in a Plastic Bag, Left Hanging on a Tree Branch with a Rotting Tail
Together with her sibling, this puppy was found in a plastic bag that was left hanging on a tree branch. Rubber bands were tied to both puppies' tails causing their tails to rot. Her brother has been adopted through one of our recent adoption drives, but this girl was in bad shape and the vet warned us that she may not make it. She has beaten the odds and is now ready to be discharged. We are looking for a foster carer to temporarily house her until our adoption drive next month.

AMERICAN BULLY WITH DEMODEX AND HEARTWORM

American Bully with Demodex and Heartworm
Two American Bullies were found abandoned - believed to be dumped by breeders. The younger female has since been discharged. The one in the picture, however, is still boarded at a veterinary clinic to be treated for demodex and heartworm. Upon recovery, she will be vaccinated and neutered. We were told that the veterinary bill for both American Bullies is still pending at the clinic.

PLEASE HELP US HELP THESE UNFORTUNATE DOGS TO GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE!

Our Little Fashion Icons - Valentino and Patch

VALENTINO

Valentino, also known as Little V, was dragging himself through the streets of Ipoh when Audrey found him. She immediately sought the help of MDDB, which agreed to take over the case.

Valentino was believed to be the weakest among his siblings, and thus, was abandoned by his mother when he could not keep up. The mother may also be malnourished when she was pregnant with Valentino.

When discussing the prognosis and treatment options with our panel veterinarian, the vet was optimistic that with regular therapy sessions, Valentino might stand a chance to walk. Apart from daily physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, Valentino is also receiving Traditional Chinese Veterinary Treatment on a weekly basis.

PATCH

Patch's paws were literally crushed when he was spotted lying on the side of the road by a rescuer. Upon interrogation, employees of a nearby shop informed that the injury was at least a week old, and that Patch had remained in the same spot for two days.

Patch was transferred from one vet clinic to another; the first suggested euthanasia as an option, whereas the second refused to treat him. It was the third clinic that finally shared the same opinion as us - to give Patch a second chance in life.

The vet on duty explained that Patch's wounds were infected, and that amputations could only be performed when the infections are stopped. Patch was admitted to the vet clinic for daily wound cleansing and dressing change. However, when his rescuers visited him, his fighting spirit seemed to have disappeared. Fearing that he might just wither away, Patch was discharged and placed under home care.

One week later, Patch was brought to the same vet clinic for check-up. According to the vet's diagnosis, Patch's wounds were healing beautifully, and amputation of both his limbs was not encouraged as Patch was depending on his stumps to move about.

We are planning to get him a pair of prosthetic legs once he is fully grown.

Embracing Another Milestone: First International Adoption

The Stray Puppy
One rainy day, a stray puppy squeezed through the gate, and sought shelter in the porch of a house in Cheras. Its mother whimpered anxiously, out in the street, in a vain attempt to call for her sole puppy to follow her. And, it was this fateful day that marked the beginning of something beautiful - the duo's journey to the Land of the Free.

The Mama Dog
The family spotted the puppy in their compound, and alerted MDDB. Our Rescue Coordinator attended to the distress call. Both mother and son were later caught in an initial plan to rehome the puppy and TNRM (Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage) the mum.

An unexpected turn of events, when the stray puppy's intelligence caught Diane Levinson's attention, led to the first International Adoption of Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better. Not having the heart to break the strong, enduring bond between the mother and son, the mama dog that was then released as part of our TNRM Project was captured again, and reunited with her puppy. The mama dog and her puppy were named "Mama Chinta" and "Toby" respectively.

Mama Chinta and Toby
The two spent several months in their first foster carer's home where they were vaccinated and desexed. They were later transferred to our Rehabilitation Coordinator's home for crate training.

Crate Training
Soon enough, this mother-son pair was ready to fly to their new home in San Bruno, Northern California.

On the Way to Cargo KLIA
In early July, Mama Chinta and Toby finally met Levinson for the first time at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

Levinson Greeted the Inseparable Pair at SFO
Upon arriving home, Toby instantly warmed up to his human family. Mama Chinta, on the other hand, was shy; she was hiding in her crate most of the time, and would only venture out for food and toilet trips. Both were hostile towards their adoptive canine siblings - Yodi and Mose.

Nonetheless, with great patience, Levinson brought Mama Chinta out of her shell, and helped the two newcomers find their place in her household pack.

Its been quite a while since this blog was updated as most of our updates are now being done on Facebook. However, having received a note from an old supporter who does not Facebook, I've realised its time  this blog is 'reactivated'. Much has happened since the last update and I'll try my level best to summarize everything and post them here in a day or two. I have  decided that this blog would henceforth  also be a conduit for me to share my thoughts in addition to our MDDB activities. So, stay tuned folks!

JULY ADOPTION DRIVE

Milo the dog was found tied to an electrical pole in Segambut about a month ago.
The pint-sized dog’s front and back paws as well as his neck was secured tightly to the post and the dog was both frightened and in pain.
Luckily canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) highlighted Milo’s plight on its Facebook page after being informed by a member of the public and managed to get several rescuers to rush to the spot and free the dog in the wee hours of the morning.
Milo was taken to a veterinary clinic where he was treated and neutered under MDDB’s sponsorship and is now ready for adoption.
According to MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai, Milo’s fosterer says he is good with other dogs and gets along fine with cats a well.
“He is also very loving and would make a good pet,’’ said Lai adding his small stature also made Milo suitable for people who cannot handle big dogs.
Milo will be among the nearly 20 puppies and dogs that will be put-up for adoption by MDDB at the Summit Shopping Complex in USJ Subang Jaya this Sunday.
MDDB’s merchandise such as T-shirts would also be sold at the event which will be held at the complex main entrance from 10.00am to 6.00pm.
According to Lai, MDDB was also seeking funds to pay for the veterinary bills of the many dogs currently under its care.
“The past few weeks have been really bad with so many seriously injured dogs coming our way. We have no other alternative other than depend on public generosity to help these dogs,’’ said Lai.
She added MDDB was also in need of supplies such as rice, dog and puppy dry and canned food, cat and kitten dry and canned food, bleach, washing soap, dog shampoo, old towels and old newspapers.
Those wanting to donate these items as well as contribute towards MDDB’s escalating veterinary bills can do so at the adoption drive.

WHY?

It was an interesting day today with us having the opportunity to meet a man mentioned in this post. Although Shalinee Fernandez had said that is company was a private dog catching company, the man explained that his biz focused on other areas. He rectified the misconception that his was dog catching company and stated that it was instead an animal control, disease control, vector management and training business . He said his company does not kill the dogs caught as they do not propagate culling but instead hand them over to the respective councils that agree to a more humane solution to the problem. We had a two hour chat whereby he explained the kind of work his company carried out and requested that mention of his company, picture and everything else is removed because he did not want to be involved in issues revolving around MDDB and MIAR. Fair enough. We asked him about the time when MIAR had a demonstration with the story coming out in the media about his company and some dogs caught in Kajang. According to MIAR, the dogs were kept in the van without any water and food. According to the man, the van is compartmentalized and water and food dishes are put away after use. At the time the video and pictures were take, it was lunch break and his staff had been having their meal. He said MIAR had removed the incriminating content from their FB page once he had spoken to them. He also said his company van had only helped transport the dogs from DBKL to Kajang and not anywhere else. Anyways, we are going to honour our word of removing his name and that of his company given that as he said he did not want his business to be collateral damage. But we did tell him that MDDB is against any form of commercialization involving stray management in the country.
 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I have received many calls from my friends from other rescue groups including shelters SPCA and PAWS. I told them I will settle this once and for all and therefore have chosen to expose some information that I have been receiving over the weeks.

I strongly believe that the reasons  MIAR is lying and fabricating as well as have hatched a plan to snatch our Justice away is because:

1) They want to use Justice to make money as can be seen on the FB page they continue highlighting pictures of past cases

2) To cover-up their misdeeds

3) To finish our reputation as we are the only ones pursuing the case where 40+ dogs rescued by them from the DBKL pound were released in Broga.

This was revealed to me by none other than Keren Ho, whom I met together with Yeap Sze Min and Gary Kim. Keren Ho, Yeap Sze Min and Gary Kim were co-founders of MIAR with Puspa Rani but had left after coming to know of her true colours. Shalinee Fernandez, who is an MDDB reject is merely a new fixture to Puspa's small entourage.

Anyway, before the trio came to see me - a cat rescuer name Liza had told a veteran rescuer about the 40 dogs being released in Broga after they were taken to Kajang from the DBKL pound.

Keren told me that in addition to not being neutered, some of the dogs that were released had not been tested for distemper or parvo.

What these MIAR people had done was to create a situation whereby city dogs were released in the outskirts where they may not know how to fend for themselves. Given that they were not neutered, there would be a population boom in the area which would result in the private dog catching company servicing the area coming in to make their money.

We were told that there were several people present when the dogs were loaded into a white van. They included a lady called Susan who allegedly told the others not to tell anyone about it. The others were Puspa Rani, Keren Ho, Rachel who works for a pet magazine and another girl called Viknes. Apparently a white van drove away with the dogs from the Kajang shelter.  I was also told that she does not feed the strays on a daily basis as she claims......because if she did, she would certainly post pictures or even videos of it because it was Puspa Rani's nature to highlight all her 'good deeds'.

Anyway, while all these were going on, I received an email from someone called  job314imf@gmail.comand

who said he or she was at the DBKL rescue and was closely linked to MIAR, telling about what had happened and also sending me links and photos.

Meanwhile, the heat was also on Puspa Rani after some of the friends she had confided in over the release of the dogs started questioning her and shooting PMs here and there. This is one such message received by another rescuer:

I happen to believe that the dogs are there. I have nothing against Pupsa and i hold high respect for her but i am very concerned about the dogs welfare. What Wani said is true, we do not want the council to go on a mass killing. I did ask Pupsa what would happen to the dogs that were rescued and she said that she'll go feed the dogs everyday in Broga hill. I wish to remain anonymous. I do not want to be a part of this feud. My only concern is the welfare of the dogs. If they are really, really there .. Please do all that you can to rescue them before the council gets to them. I am just worried for the dogs, they might be killed when supposedly they're safe. Plus, they might not even know how and where to look for food since mentioned, it's a hill. I just wish to not get involved because i have nothing to do with this and i consider both Pupsa and Wani my friends.

So, they are beginning to feel the heat, so the distraction. Dumping unspayed dogs in Broga Hill which is a popular hiking track is irresponsible. To hide animal cruelty in local council pounds simply because they want to be the local councils' friend is equally irresponsible.

Soon after the dumping of the 40+ dogs were revealed, Shalinee and Puspa Rani hurried to the Selangor DVS to try and fix things up. They also removed some dogs from another local council pound but hid the fact that the dogs were kept in a deplorable condition without even clean drinking water. this is in line with their close association with tainted local councilor Anthony Thanasayan who has taken it upon himself to defend councils' abuse of dogs. He has plans to take them into the councils and help cover-up the atrocities committed against dogs there.

CRUELTY KEPT UNDER WRAPS BY MIAR

A veteran rescuer's concern after I sent her the pictures received from JOB.

These charlatans can try to do damage to us and thwart the focus from them but we know that responsible rescuers will come forward to prevent the dogs from being caught and killed for money. If you want the dogs in Broga to be captured and neutered before release, please speak up. Meanwhile, we are going to let these MIAR fools hyperventilate and go on their psychotic rampage. We know that we will be receiving more evidence on them.
