Adopt a puppy


PROFESSIONAL bodybuilder Terry Gallyot may be big and tough but when it comes to dogs, he’s a hardcore softie at heart.

The former 1999 Mr Asia, who is a staunch supporter of canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), is currently very concerned about the welfare of stray dogs.

His current endorsement is a four-month old puppy named Trillion that was saved just in time before he was put to sleep at a local council pound.

Trillion’s fate changed when MDDB rescue coordinator Irene Low had gone to the pound to ‘bail out’ several dogs that had been caught.

“Trillion rushed to the enclosure’s gate and started whining and looking at me with pleading eyes.

“When I bent down to pet him, I noticed tears in his eyes,’’ said Low who immediately saved Trillion from death and took him home to be fostered.

Trillion will be one of the puppies that will at MDDB’s adoption drive at Jaya One from 11.30am to 7.30pm on Sunday March 20.

The adoption drive will be located at Block NB1, facing Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee.

“We hope that Trillion will find a home as he deserves a loving human family,’’ said Low.

Meanwhile, MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai said Kota Alam Shah assmblyman M. Manoharan will host an adoption drive at his service center on Sunday, March 27 from 11am to 6pm.

The service centre is located at 7A, Persiaran Raja Muda Musa and is between the Klang traffic police contingent headquarters and Hin Hua High School.

She said those wanting to make donations to MDDB and its feline welfare counterpart Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP) can also drop off the dog or cat items at both venues.

Requiem

Kramer when he first came to us

Its really raining daggers for us at MDDB. Our golden boy Kramer died on the operating table this morning during surgery. Kramer was born with one normal testicle and one testicle which was growing inside.
He was scheduled for the surgery as the vet opined that the testicle which was inside could become infected or turn cancerous as he grows-up. He was also to be castrated during the surgery as our Kramer had grown-up and started to experience the instinct to mate. According to the vet Dr Edmond, his blood pressure started plummeting and in spite of adrenaline being administered, Kramer's heart gave out.
We are all shocked, especially his dedicated fosterers Irene and Kay, as our Kramer had been a healthy and robust boy. We asked for a post-mortem to be done and the vet found a growth which was attached to his heart and it was bleeding.

The growth is now in a jar in Dr Edmond's clinic. This is a huge tragedy for us given that Dumex also passed away several days ago. An X-ray also showed that she had ball-shaped growth inside of her as well as an enlarged heart.

Irene and Kay, we are certain, are devastated as they had taken great pains to ensure that Kramer was not affected by his disability.

One of our friends Kevin is also currently in Thailand visiting a pet products and good dealer to look into a set of custom-made wheels for our Kramer. We had his life planned out for him and this had to happen.

Whenever a puppy or dog, that we rescue dies, our hearts shatter into a million pieces, tears are shed and excruciating pain is felt. All of us then ask ourselves, how much longer can we take this pain that comes with losing these innocent souls.
Dear Kramer, rest in peace. This dastardly dog-hating place was never meant for one as beautiful as you.
Thank you Irene and Kay for loving Kramer and giving him a good home.
We would also like to thank Norbert and Rasika who had offered to pay for Kramer's medical bills. However, he was never even once sick and had to go to the vet when and after the offer had been made.

ADOPTION DRIVE

Several of the puppies rescued from the Selayang Municipal Council pound are finally well enough to be adopted.
Canine welfare group Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better’s (MDDB) adoption coordinator Christina Lai said the puppies were now awaiting adoption at a veterinary clinic in Subang Jaya.
“Those interested in giving these puppies homes, that had gone against all the odds stacked against them and survived, can contact us,’’ said Lai.
In addition to the pound puppies, MDDB also many new rescued puppies and dogs for adoption.
“People have now resorted to coming and leaving puppies at our doorstep and we are once again overwhelmed with countless puppies and dogs,’’ she said.
As usual MDDB will be having its monthly adoption drive at the Summit Subang Jaya on Sunday, May 16 from 11.00am to 7.00pm.
“We hope people come and show us their support by adopting these unfortunate puppies and dogs,’’ said Lai.
She said MDDB could continue their rescue work only if the puppies and dogs that were currently with them were all adopted out.
“We hope our puppies will all be adopted this Sunday as there are many more puppies that are roaming the streets and would probably all end-up dead soon if we don’t rescue them as soon as possible,’’ said Lai.
She also added that MDDB has also started taking in cats and kittens.
“There are just far too many strays due to poor management techniques by the local councils. The Best method is always the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) method and it’s a pity that the authorities here are not receptive to the idea.
Lai said MDDB also looked forward to receiving contribution in cash and kind to help the organisation continue with its mission.
Those wanting to donate rice, dry and canned dog, puppy, cat and kitten food, dog and cat shampoo, rice, towels and old newspapers could drop the items at the adoption drive.

We currently have 50 over puppies and dogs looking for homes and expect to bring at least 40 of them there.

A large number of the puppies and dogs will be those rescued from the Klang and Selayang pounds.

The adoption drive would be held from 11.00am to 7.00pm near the Starbucks entrance.

Kindness to Animals a Tenet of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Teachings

Kuala Lumpur — With a new Pew Forum study showing that one out of every four people in the world is a Muslim, PETA Asia has unveiled IslamicConcerns.com, a site designed to help guide Muslims who are interested in exploring animal-friendly alternatives to everything from lamb kebabs and leather jackets to the sacrifice of goats on the holy days of Haj. The site provides information on what Islamic scholars have said regarding a vegetarian diet and discusses what the Qur'an and the hadiths say about human interaction with animals. It also addresses subjects such as the use of animals in lethal product tests and the care of animals in the home.

"The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that there is an estimable reward for showing kindness to every living being," says PETA member Nadia Montasser. "The prophet also says that God has no mercy on one who has no mercy on others."

Most animals on factory farms never see the sun, breathe fresh air, or feel the ground beneath their feet. They are often injured and die during transport. Sharia law prohibits causing needless pain to any animal before slaughter. The flesh of improperly killed animals is haram (forbidden) under Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) teachings also call for compassion to dogs and donkeys, who are among the most abused animals in the Middle East. He told of a prostitute whose sins were forgiven by Allah because she had filled her shoe with water for a thirsty dog, and he admonished his followers for throwing stones at a bird and for beating a donkey. He also warned that the punishment on Judgment Day for a woman who locked up a cat and left the animal to starve would be torture and hell.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better will have its monthly adoption drive this Sunday. We hope that all our puppies will be successfully rehomed as we need the space to care for the Klang pound puppies. The puppies are currently with fosterers as well as in several veterinary clinics. Many are very anti-social and snappy and we need to bring them to our half-way-home to familiarise them with people as well as to give them good nourishment to build-up their immunity. MDDb is also appealing for hep to settle its never ending veterinary bills. Dry and canned dog food, dog shampoo and towels are also welcome. Given the gravity of the dog catching rampage in Klang - MDDB is calling for a peaceful gathering of animal lovers and sympathisers at Klang Municipal Council Dog Pound this Saturday between 12.00pm to 1.00pm. We have no other choice other than doing this to show the council that they should immediately stop what they are doing to prevent the unnecessary suffering of these animals as well the possible outbreak of distemper, parvo and corona outbreak in Klang. WOOF MEOW CHARITY CAR-NIVAL IS SET TO ‘HELP PEOPLE HELP PETS’ THIS 12th DECEMBER!

Petaling Jaya, 9th December 2009 - The Woof Meow Charity Carnival is all set to take place on the 12.12.09 from 10am- 6pm at the Sports Plaza PJ (Lot 14, Jalan Bersatu Seksyen 13/4).

This fund raising event is being held to raise much needed funds to help independent pet rescuers and animal welfare organizations to continue with their efforts in addressing animal welfare issues in. Malaysia.

Proceeds of the Charity will go to the Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better and Furry Friend Farm; two animal shelters in Malaysia which practice a No-Kill policy. All proceeds will be spilt between the both of them.

This fund-raising event is led by Shyam Priah with help from friends Subashni Bahsu, Petri Marttinen and Daphne Iking– “just your simple average citizens who care about the environment and the disturbing issues that concern our society,” says leader of the pack, Shyam.

Shyam and friends are no strangers to volunteering and doing their part in “giving back to the community”. Early this year, they spearheaded Sampah Masyarakat, an organization to tackle the Malaysian malady of littering through voluntary cleaning efforts. Armed with only gloves, rakes and shovels, 50 kind-hearted souls cleared the rubbish and litter left behind by the 1.3 million devotees that visits Batu Caves during the annual Thaipusam celebration.

This time around, Shyam and friends were saddened by the plight of the 300 stray dogs or so, that were rounded up by Pulau Ketam residents and deported to an isolated mangrove island to fend for themselves.

Most did not survive as there is no space, no food and no water. Most died trying to swim back. Organizations like Furry Friends Farm tried to help as many dogs as they could. But there is only so much they can do with the limited funds and resources that they have.

Educating the public in the areas of pet care, importance of spaying and teaching owners on raising their pets the right way, BESIDES sheltering stray animals, requires more than just time and passion. These independent organizations often run low on funds, proving a hindrance to their efforts.

“That is why we need funds to assist them as well as to educate pet owners on responsible pet ownership, and we hope to achieve with this charity drive,” adds Shyam.

The event will also see a celebrity car wash with the radio and TV personalities, led by Daphne Iking and Friends. Among those who have agreed to volunteer are Rina Omar, Amber Chia, Ben Ibrahim, David Lai as well as the top winners of the recent Malaysian Ford Models Search, Kelly Jagan and Danny Lim.

Some of the other activities besides the Carwash would be:

1. Jumble sale
2. A pet adoption drive
3. Malaysian female rally driver, Gina Finanza will be there with her rally car to talk about her career
4. A Mini owners group will be doing a drive by, titled Doggies in Minis.
5. A sassy PDRM K9 unit demo

The event will also see the largest honorary tribute ever done for pets in Malaysia.
The event is planned to be eco friendly by using Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Alternative soap which took 3 months to prepare!

KRAMER

Dear all,

we have brought forward our adoption drive by a week due to other events that we have to attend next week.

Besides having our usual adoption drive - we will also be raising funds to go towards the acupuncture and physiotherapy treatment for Kramer - the four-month-old puppy suffering from nerve injury.

Kramer was hit by the moving electric gate at his human's house. Not able to care for him anymore - his humans surrendered him to us and we hope to do everything possible to try to get his hind legs working again.

The vet says that Kramer is suffering from a nerve injury which could be reversible.

We are thankful that he is not paralysed and has good bowel movement as well as some leg movements.

Come to our adoption drive venue to meet little Kramer.

Those wanting to donate canned and dry dog food, rice, dog shampoo, towels and toys to the MDDB half-way home can also drop the items off at the adoption drive.

Dear Peeps,

its been quite some time since you heard from me.

My apologies.

Being webmistress, public relations director, MDDB canine representative and half-way-home manageress is trully time consuming. That is why we are looking at appointing other canines to help me shoulder the responsibilities.

In view of this, I take great pride in announcing that we have appointed Mr Strong Boy Hee as our fundraising director.

He is sweet natured and a hardworker and that is why we appointed him to the job.

Now that we have a half-way-home to keep our rescued dogs and pups, our rescue operations are very very frequent.

You wouldn't believe the the number of pups we pick up almost on a daily basis and what is most shocking is that we can actually tell the pedigree of one parent.

This boils down to the fact that people do not neuter their male pedigree dogs and let them out unsupervised.

We all know what happens next ...........poor female stray gets knocked-up and litter indiscriminately.

So, people please neuter your dogs!
