MDDB cries for help as more canines get abandoned

Jackie the Jack Russel Terrier was thrown out of the house by its owner in Klang about a month ago.

Although a neighbour, who had seen what had happened, took Jackie back, the owner refused to accept the five-year-old dog.

Jackie will be one of the 40 puppies and dogs that will be up for adoption at the Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) monthly adoption at the Summit Shopping Complex tomorrow.

The adoption drive which is from 11.30am to 7.30pm will be held at Summit’s side entrance.

Another adoption drive will be held the following week on Aug 21 at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya.

The event will be held from 11.30am to 7.30pm at Block NB1, facing Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee.

According to MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai, MDDB was in dire state to find homes for the puppies due to an influx of abandoned puppies and dogs.

“There are just far too many with us and we have to find homes for them in order to help more dogs and puppies that are in need,’’ she added.

Lai said dumping of pets and animal cruelty were in the increase with individuals even going to the extent of harming animals especially dogs.

“We were told recently that a pregnant dog was set on fire by some people. We also received pictures of the dead dog,’’ said Lai.

She said MDDB had also recently rescued and treated a dog which lost its entire nose after a resident in a housing estate is believed to have loped it off with a machete.

Lai said MDDB was also sponsoring the treatment and caring of a two-month-old puppy that had been splashed with hot water or oil. “Who are all these people who have no qualms about resorting to so much cruelty?’’ asked a perplexed Lai.

MDDB is also in need of supplies and those wanting to donate dog and puppy food, cat and kitten food, bleach, old towels, old newspapers, shampoo and rice can drop them off at the adoption drive.

Semenyih Puppy

We have had some offers for fostering and we hope that the Semenyih puppy will soon lose its fear of people. However, we note that it is not as fearful as it was initially but still is afraid to let people touch it. So, it is defensive but we believe the puppy can be rehabilitated if it is shown love. It is also crucial that the puppy is fostered in a home where there are other dogs so that it can figure out for itself that people are there to help it. Only after this is done can the puppy be treated. And not to worry, we will not euthanize it.

Napoleon is bored

LET ME OUT AND THAT'S AN ORDER!

Napoleon is bored being cooped-up in the cage and is becoming very vocal about his dissatisfaction. He wants to break free but is too little to do it. We have left instructions that he is to be kept away from Ma Barker lest he emulates her notorious ways. His wounds are healing well but we were a tad to late yesterday and managed to only arrive at the clinic after the dressing had been done. Vet says his wounds is now only a small patch and they will be suturing it to close it up to help it heal completely. His attitude is excellent and he wants to be friends with everyone - in spite of the torture he had undergone. Brave boy Napoleon.

Mimi Chitta nose healing well

The tubes in Mimi Chitta's nose has been removed and the only thing to do is to wait for the fresh wound to heal. According to the vet, Mimi Chitta and her mother (whose lump in the teat according to lab reports is benign) are very rowdy. They can break out of any cage and can even bite off stainless steel parts of the cage. Mimi Chitta's mother is the more notorious of the two and she is under clinic arrest until she is sent back home. She must be the canine version of the notorious Ma Baker. Mimi Chitta is doing well but still somewhat frightened of people.

Another horrid Sunday - James Dean is dead.

James Dean, didn't want to eat yesterday but ate a little when we started to hand feed him. Today he was in pain and biting on to his blanket. He has been rushed to the vet and but died. This is the worst news that we have had - because James had been with us for a while and we had tried everything possible to ensure that he continued living. HE had gone through two surgeries - and we thought he would survive. Matter of fact one of the reasons we had wanted to cover-up and extend the corner section of our half-way-home is that James Dean could have a place to live which would enable him to enjoy the fresh air. Vet says his kidneys had failed him. R.I.P James, we love you. We tried but we failed. We are sorry to have let you down.

R.I.P Mr T a.k.a The Face

The damage done was far too much and the tumours kept growing although they initially appeared to dry-up. The poor dog died in his sleep although we tried hard. What else can we say other that at least he did not rot and die alone out there on the streets. R.I.P doggie.

What do we do - opinions please.

Remember this puppy which was rescued in Semenyih? Reco and Mikheala had fetched it from Semenyih and brought it to our panel vet today. According to the the puppy was very afraid of humans and made a lot of noise but it appeared to calm down when touched and petted.
The vet also called us and told us that both its back legs were broken and its back could be injured as well but they couldn't do much because it screamed every time someone went near it.
He said since the leg fractures were old, they were probably healed and the pain was more psychological than anything. He also said that the dog was wagging its tail every time it cringed in fear.
For us this is a sign that it is begging for mercy.
(Remember the dog that was brutally killed by the Batu Pahat Municipal Council - it was wagging its tail profusely as they were brutalising it.)
Anyway, we have been advised by the vet to euthanise the puppy because it was very difficult to treat it because of this.

However, there are options of fitting it with wheels but to do that it has to lose its fear for people. We believe the puppy is very frightened of people because it must have been severely and cruelly beaten-up.
We also think that the pup must be shown love - hugging and caressing so that it will learn to trust people before any form of treatment can be started.
It is difficult for us to give this pup individual attention because we have far to many to care for and it may be stressed at the half-way-home.
Can someone please foster this puppy and show it some love so that it will overcome its fear of people? 019-3576477.

SAD SAD SITUATION

Its sad to note that our society is evolving into one that is lacking in compassion - we were rankled to learn from an independent rescuer friend about an MKA certified purebred Labrador that a wealthy family acquired for more than RM2,000 which they decided to euthanize recently for a whimsy reason. They had sent it to a shelter for the job to be done. Here's what she says:

"I was asked by a friend to help her rehome the dog because the children had lost interest in the dog and it was neglected. Also there was no maggot wound initially. It was some skin problem that caused the neck area to go bald, wet and stinky. I recommended them to another vet as their first vet was expensive and ineffective. It was treated so she said but after it was sent to the shelter, I was told there was a maggot wound infection because it was not cared for properly and flies must have laid eggs on the raw patch. So in some ways she tried to treat it but in the last resort due to maggot wound infection and the time and money she has to further spend, she decided the best way was to get rid of it. "

The dog apparently had a wound in its neck which became a maggot wound. The rich family decided that they did not want the dog anymore as they were not willing to pay for the treatment of the maggot wound which wouldn't have cost much.
So they sent it to the shelter - their maid and driver helped deliver the dog to the shelter where it was ordered to be put down.
Maggot wound are not serious and for it to reoccur means that whoever is supposed to care for the dog did a shoddy job.
So, its not the dog's fault that it had a maggot wound in its neck - its the owners' fault for not treating the wound when it was still fresh.
By the time our friend learnt about this and went to the shelter - the nasty deed had already been done. The poor dog which was about only 2 years of age was no more.
It had already been euthanized because these people who were poor excuses for human beings wanted it dead.

Killed in cold blood simply because cruel owners did not want to spend what they could easily afford to treat their dog.

RIP

We also learnt that the parents of a young girl that was fostering a distemper survivor dog had had the dog put down as well. We are not sure but we think the girl had desperately asked for the dog to be fostered at our adoption page.
What is our society coming to?

PLEASE HELP REX

This handsome dog Rex was rescued and adopted by a nice family but he has bitten the family members who now think they cannot handle him.
There is contemplation to put him to sleep. One of our independent rescuer friends was instrumental in Rex's adoption and rehoming is rankled with what had happened. The family cannot be blamed because they kept him in spite of him biting two members not long ago. They also take him for walks twice a day.
We notice that he has not been neutered and male dogs that are not neutered and not allowed to mate can go berserk. Our friend has also noticed that he plays a lot with his THAT and this could indicate that he is horny.
Anyway, we think that he should not be put to sleep and our friend will take him to be neutered as soon as possible. Currently she is facing an emotional meltdown because of this as well as well as a few other rescue cases. We understand this and have given our word and commitment that we will house him and find him a home.
That is the least we can down for a rescuer friend who is shedding tears of anguish because of the misfortune that has befallen these unfortunate dogs.
We believe Rex would make a great guard dog. Call 019-3576477 if you think you can help Rex.

ANOTHER INJURED DOG AT MIMI CHITTA'S KAMPUNG

Mimi Chitta's human family called to say that there was a puppy which had fractured three of its legs. But from the picture, we think only two of its hind legs are fractured.Apparently the puppy had been just lying there for several days. We have asked them to take in the puppy and now need to collect it to be sent to our panel vet. We also want to send MIMI Chitta's mother back at the same time. Any volunteers? Please call 019-3576477.

CAR PARK PUPPY IN NEED OF URGENT HELP

Grotty is one of the car park pups that Bavani has been trying to rescue. A car ran over his paw sometime last week nearly splitting the end into two.
There is possibility of nerve damage and if there is, the leg would be rendered useless and Grotty would end-up dragging the limb around.
Currently, he has been admitted to the veterinary clinic where he is being first treated for the wound before the vets determine if there is indeed nerve damage or even paralysis. In the event there is, then the best solution would be to amputate that limb.
But the report by the attending vet stipulates that there is pain and pain is always good news as it means that there is sensation in the leg.
Currently, his stay at the vets is costing a bomb due to boarding and dressing. Bavani has paid a deposit of RM300 and we have to raise the rest. We are currently looking for someone who can foster him for a month and do his dressing as well.
There is someone who will take him after that but the person is currently away traveling. Grotty is very quiet and is easy to care for. If you want to help us help Grotty, please call 019-3576477.

At the vet's after the accident. He was rushed there by Bavani
The paw which is almost split

Grotty's case reminds us of what happened to Rocky the Rockster who is now with us. A motorbike had run over one of his front paws and there was injury as well as nerve damage. His paw grew in size and soon Rocky's affected paw became bended. His bended paw became inflamed and there was danger of infection and subsequent septicemia - so we amputated the limb and Rocky is now a happy rockster. HE is also for adoption and Rocky is an adorable fellow who thinks he's THE MAN. Best that he is the only dog or allowed to be the alpha male by the potential owner's other pets. Vaccinated and spayed.
