Assemblyman Manoharan hosting dog adoption drive

With too many puppies rescued and with nowhere to house them, canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) is desperately looking for adopters or fosterers to take them in.

Coming to MDDB’s aid this time around is Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan who is holding an adoption drive at his service centre tomorrow.

The service centre is located at 7A, Persiaran Raja Muda Musa and is between the Klang traffic police contingent headquarters and Hin Hua High School.

About 20 puppies and dogs will be put up for adoption at the drive which will be held from 11am to 5pm.

Manoharan said he decided to help MDDB because he was aware of the plight of stray dogs.

“I also support MDDB’s call for the local councils to initiate the trap-neuter-release-manage (TNRM) method instead of catching and culling strays,’’ said Manoharan.

MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai thanked Manoharan for his kind gesture and hoped Klang residents would come in full force to support the maiden adoption drive in their town.

“A large number of the puppies up for adoption are from Klang and we hope they will be adopted and given a second chance in life,’’ said Lai.

She said those wanting to make donations to MDDB and its feline welfare counterpart Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP) can also drop off the items at the venue.

“We need dry and canned dog and puppy food, dry and canned cat and kitten food, old newspapers, dog and cat shampoo, old towels, rice, cages, detergent and bleach,’’ said Lai.

German Shepherd for adoption

MOLLY DESERVES BETTER
This German Shepherd belongs to an Indonesian family that will be leaving the country soon. They will be leaving in Feb and decided they did not want to take 6-year-old Molly with them. One of the family members told us that his brother bought Molly from a pet shop when she was a pup but had left home for Indonesia some years back. He does not want her in Indonesia either. We must say we were shocked to see a pix of the dog. Molly deserves better. We beg any one of you to please take Molly in and we will pay for whatever treatment is necessary for her. Please help.

WHAT DO WE DO?

A lady from Klang saw a group of men catching a young dog and placing it into a sack while on her way to a shop on Tuesday night. The dog struggled and the man holding the sack swung it and hit a lamp post several times. When they realised they were being watched, the man dumped the sack and left the place with his group. Fearing for her safety, the lady returned home and went back the following day and saw the dog was still lying on the sack without moving. Yesterday evening her daughter brought the dog to us and we have admitted her at one of our panel vets. There was nothing wrong with the young dog except for some swelling around the abdomen - probably due to being whacked against the lamp post. She had refused to move from the spot out of fear and also trauma. Going by the facts given to us, we believe the group of men were Vietnamese and the dog was probably their dinner for the day. How do we tackle a problem such as this? For them, the dog is a food source just like cattle, poultry and pigs - among others. The only way would be to make dog meat consumption illegal here - like how it is in countries such as Taiwan. But would the authorities do this? I am sure most of you would recall a top ranking official from the Department of Veterinary Services who said that dog meat consumption should be regarded as being okay. There are many dog meat restaurants in this country - where do they get their supply? From the pounds? Where?

We were troubled to see the picture of two morons with a hanged puppy. But we are not surprised. Last week someone we know asked us for help. Apparently a puppy hanging from a rope was tied outside his friend's pet shop. Luckily, the puppy survived. We told them to allow the puppy to get over its ordeal before being vaccinated and handed over to us. Then about three weeks ago one of our adopters stumbled upon a dog lying by the side of Kesas Highway. The dog was dehydrated and suffered some internal injuries. The owner of a nearby workshop told the lady the dog had been knocked down at about 8.00am and it was almost 2.00pm when she saw the poor dog. No one, including the workshop owner, had even bothered to call for help. The lady rushed the dog to us and we admitted him to veterinary clinic. He died the same night. Then there is Jerry - he was crawling behind some houses in Taman Andalas, Klang. It is believed someone had hit him with a stick and injured his back - making him unable to walk. We admitted him to a veterinary clinic and he is still there and will be coming to our half-way-home soon. He still can't walk. Then there was the Terrier cross that was mowed down near PJ Hilton. No one bothered to help until a friend's sister and her husband spotted the dog. We rushed her to a veterinary hospital and she survived for over two weeks but died all of a sudden. She was wearing a collar - how did she get there? The vet says she had extensive internal injuries. The worst case is the puppy we rescued in Kapar. Someone living in the area had witnessed the puppy being kicked - he called us - we went to the scene immediately and rushed the puppy to a veterinary hospital. The puppy never regained consciousness and died a week later. How can you expect animals to be treated well by lay people when government bodies such as local councils condone and practice cruelty towards dogs?
