FOOLS!

http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2011/4/14/central/8475437&sec=central
The Subang Jaya Municipal Council does not cease to amaze us. Apart from being one of the biggest abusers of canines in Selangor, the council has also proven over and over again that it is a dog-hating imbecile. The latest crap that has come from this troubled local council is its witch hunt plan of dogs belonging to the eight breeds mentioned in the article. Surely, the council isn't actually thinking that people will allow them to simply remove their pets to be taken away and killed. Pfffft! Don't they have anything better to do other than constantly waging war with dogs. MDDB understands it is the prerogative of the council to activate the ban - okay, say that it is illegal to purchase these breeds from April 14, 2011 - but to actually say that they are going to seize existing pets is criminal. MDDB will fight the council all the way.
Don't forget the fight we gave you in regard to this dog in 2008. MDDB also condemns the Selangor state government for its inability to control its local councils. Please emulate your Penang counterpart that has done quite a bit for canine welfare. Tan Sri Khalid, its time you put your foot down and order these local councils from behaving like barbarians.
And to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) that implemented the ban - how did these breeds get into the country in spite of your ban? Di you inform the Customs Department of the ban which was implemented years ago? If it is being bred locally, who allowed breeders to breed these dogs? Given that some of these dogs are MKA certified, how did this gaffe happen?

ADOPTION DRIVE

Ready for a home: Santarina will be at the adoption drive in Summit Subang Jaya.

Thursday April 7, 2011

Santarina needs a home

SANTARINA and her five siblings were rescued from a dump in Kapar about five months ago. All her siblings have been successful in finding homes except Santarina.

To make matters worse, she has been returned to canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) by prospective adopters.

“Santarina is a very intelligent canine who is calm and cool all the time. She is observant and is also what we call a ‘talking’ dog,’’ said MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai.

Lai went on to explain that “talking” dogs usually try to communicate with people and this is misunderstood as howling.

“We hope that people will understand and give beautiful and intelligent Santarina a chance to find a home,” she said.

Santarina will be among the dogs and puppies put up for adoption at MDDB’s adoption drive in Summit Subang Jaya this Sunday.

The adoption drive, to be held at Summit’s main entrance from 11.30am to 7.30pm, will have many other puppies looking for homes.

Lai is also asking for public help as some of the puppies have been put up for boarding in various places because two dogs sent to MDDB’s half-way home came in with distemper infection.

“Because of this we have to pay for boarding as well as pay for distemper treatment which is very expensive,’’ said Lai.

The two infected dogs are doing fine and are quarantined at the half-way home.

Distemper treatment includes putting the dogs on a high protein diet as well as giving them immune boosters and medicines to prevent pneumonia and other secondary infections, said Lai.

“We need financial help to see us through this bad period in our half-way home,’’ she said.

Those who want to help can check for details at MDDB’s blog at www.malaysiandogsdeservebetter.blogspot.com

Members of the public can also contribute donations such as rice, bleach, detergent canned and dry dog, puppy, and cat and kitten food at the adoption drive.

Cuddly and furry: Guests at the event preview held by Petz PowWow for pet owners.

Pet owners’ charity meet

WANT to help independent pet rescue groups? Two organisations have lined up two separate activities to raise money for them.

The first event called Petz PowWow is organised by Petz Unleashed Sdn Bhd and revolves around creating a fun-filled day for people and their pets.

Scheduled to be held on April 16 and 17 at Mines Square, Mines shopping mall in Seri Kembangan, the event will include the participation of several animal welfare organisations and pet product companies.

Among the groups given a booth at the event is canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) and HOPE.

Petz Unleashed’s Lukman Kusuma said guests can participate in various interesting events such as the Best Dressed Pet Contest, Most Photogenic Pet(s) & Owner Contest and Best Pet & Owner Lookalike Contest.

“Petz Unleashed will be running their own contests such as Owner and Pet Food Eating Contest for which Canadian Pizza will be sponsoring pizzas,” said Lukman.

Pet food company Royal Canin will also launch its breed-specific food range for the Golden Retriever and Rottweiler at the event.

Lukman said the key objective of the Petz PowWow carnival was to provide a fun-filled outing for pet owners and their families.

“There are few avenues in Malaysia where pet owners can spend a day or two with their pets in a fun atmosphere. We are trying to provide such avenues on a regular basis and I am glad that more companies are coming forward to support us,” added Lukman.

Details are at www.petzunleashed.com, shoba@petzunleashed.com or call 012-2863471.

The second event is organised by the country’s leading adoption portal PetFinder.my on April 23 and 24.

The event, which is in conjunction with the portal’s third anniversary, is a charity fair held at Sunway Pyramid’s Orange Wing, LG2 from 12pm-8pm

PetFinder.my’s Andy Koh said the event would be attended by seven leading animal welfare NGOs — SPCA Selangor, PAWS, HOPE, Save A Stray, Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better, Paws Mission and AnimalCare.

“They will be making available an assortment of merchandise and sharing knowledge on responsibly managing pets,” said Koh.

He said that six altruistic merchants would be offering exclusive art and crafts for sale, donating the profits to charity.

In addition to various interesting products on sale, the event will also have exciting stage activities, performances and contests, offering alluring prizes and giveaways.

Taking this charity campaign a step further, PetFinder.my and HeartBeat.my has partnered to kickstart a month-long online donation drive to raise funds for the NGOs, where the latter will donate 50% of sales from PetFinder.my’s animal lovers, so people unable to attend the event can contribute as well.

ADOPTION DRIVE

ROCKY THE THREE-LEGGED WONDER WILL BE UP FOR ADOPTION AT THE EVENT
THEODORE THE GENTLE, WILL ALSO BE AT THE ADOPTION DRIVE.
MALAYSIAN DOGS DESERVE BETTER (MDDB) will be having an adoption drive in Klang on Sunday March 27. This time around Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan has generoulsy offered to host the adoption drive at his service center. More than 15 puppies and 10 adult dogs - which have all been spayed - will be up for adoption at the event. Please pass this around as some of the dogs have been with us for months. Herewith the press release:
REALISING that there are far too many dogs and puppies looking for a home, DAP’s Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan has stepped in once again to help canine welfare project Malaysia Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) to hold its adoption drive.
The drive held at his service centre from 11.00am to 6.00 pm on Sunday, March 27 will see about 10 dogs and 15 puppies that are in urgent need of adoption.
Manoharan’s service centre is at No 7A, Persiaran Raja Muda Musa, Klang and is located between the Klang traffic police contingent headquarters and Hin Hua High School.
The assemblyman says he will continue helping MDDB with its adoption drives in Klang because he understand the problem the organisation is facing.
“I know that there are too many puppies and dogs that are homeless and I appreciate MDDB’s efforts in finding them homes,’’ he said.
Manoharan urged members of the public to adopt rather than buy pets because this would give homes to the unfortunate puppies and dogs.
Meanwhile, MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai thanked Manoharan for his generosity and said she hoped more elected representatives would come forward to help with adoption drives.
“So far Manoharan, Klang MP Charles Santiago and Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng have helped us hold our adoption drives,’’ said Lai.
Lai added those wanting to make donations to MDDB and its feline welfare counterpart Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP) can also drop off the dog or cat food, old towels, old newspapers and dog and cat shampoo at the venue.

PETA ADD

This was sent to us by our friend Kar Ven and we feel that this is a very good add which captures the plight of strays beautifully. The message is very clear - the more puppies and dogs are bought from pet shops and breeders - the less the chance for mixed breed puppies and dogs to survive. The breeding will only stop when the buying does. In the Malaysian context, buying puppies and dogs will also keep the illegal breeders in business and a large number of the puppies sold by them do not even make it through the second month. PLEASE adopt instead of buying. And it also gives canine bounty hunters to make loads of money with their dog catching mayhem.

UPDATE - PUSPAKOM ACCIDENT VICTIM

This puppy was hit by a van near Puspakom. It just lay there because no one bothered nor had pity or compassion in their hearts to help the poor thing. Luckily, three days later it was spotted by someone who immediately rescued it and gave the puppy to us. It was admitted in one of our panel clinics about a week ago and had been unconscious until today - when it regained consciousness and started eating. But the puppy is still lying down and we hope that it is not paralysed. We are hoping for the best and looking for sponsorship for this puppy as it's going to be a long haul. those wanting to sponsor the puppy can either deal directly or go through us - those who want to deal direct with the clinic can write to malaysiandogsdeservebetter1@gmail.com for clinic details. Let's all hope for the best that this puppy will recover soon.

UPDATE - MAYA

Maya. miserable and in pain on the day of her rescue.
Maya now - pretty, happy and sometimes action.
Maya in one of her action moods.
This is Maya and she was among our first batch of dogs and puppies rescued from the DBKL pound in 2008. Maya was seriously injured as the dogcatchers are believed to have looped her right front limb and pulled - resulting in severe nerve damage. She was miserable with the useless limb slowing her down considerably. We then decided to amputate Maya's useless limb and she cheered=up considerably after that. May who is since been adopted by Ruth Hammond is now a happy and gregarious young dog......sometimes a little action also. We are happy that's its worked out so well for Maya who was rescued ferom the pound in time before she was put down.
