R.I.P Kitten

Last month MDDB member Christine Lai had the shock of her life when she spotted a kitten with its rectum hyanging out. The kitten was rushed to our panel clinic and a surgery carried out to reinsert the prolapssed rectum. The plucky cat survived the surgery and was doing very well but died a few days ago. We are saddened with what had transpired.

Grandpa Pinky is happy now

When the staff of a shelter were summoned to take Grandpa Pinky away from the five foot way, which had become his home, they immediately knew that he had little chance of survival if taken in. They also felt a strong sense of pity for the old poodle cross, that must have seen some very good times during its prime. They called us and we said we would take responsibility for Grandpa Pinky. He was immediately sent to one of our panel clinics where he was examined. The vet found that he was blind and deaf and has eye and skin infection. His skin was raw and bleeding and terribly infected. Grandpa Pinky's hair, or whatever that was left of it, was removed and his skin treated. However, we dared not bring Grandpa Pinky back to our half-way-home as he would be stressed with our barking dogs, talking dogs and naughty puppies. He would also be in danger of being bullied by the younger and alpha males - his treatment had cost us about RM1,000 and his boarding had hit RM 700 when we asked our KL Pooch Rescue friends to find him a foster home. They immediately set to work and found Lee Woan Mee to take him in. Grandpa Pinky is finally in safe and loving hands. Incidentally Woan Mee had also adopted a puppy that was rescued by us and independant rescuer Eileen Ng about three years ago. We have happy that Grandpa Pinky can now spend the twilight period of his life surrounded by love and care. Any form of help to meet Grandpa's veterinary bills are greatly appreciated.

OUR DOGS READY FOR ADOPTION 1

We have many many dogs that are in need of homes at the half-way-home. Photographing them is a challange as it invloves caging, chaining, grabbing and wrestling. Anyway, today we present our first segment of rehabilitated dogs that are up for adoption. If you are keen on giving any of these dogs a good, secure and loving home - please call 019-3576477 or email to malaysiandogsdeservebetter1@gmail.com

This is Laxmi and she is our resident GRO. Laxmi was rescued together with four of her puppies, all of which have been adopted. She has been spayed and vaccinated. Laxmi is very friendly and loving and is enjoys nothing more than being cuddled. She is adorable.

Fredo, was found lying down near the security post at the Klang Pantai Hospital. The security guards there were feeding him. We brought him back and found that he was running a high temperature and we believe he had spent many days in the rain. he appeared to be a lost or abandoned pet. he is a big dog and is a lovable clumsy oaf who loves to be hugged. He has been castrated and vaccinated.

Kapi of Kapar was from a litter of five pups we rescued together with the mother. The mother had severe skin disease and was completely hairless. All the puppies were okay except for Kapi who also had skin disease. Her mother has since gone to stay in one of our friend's sanctuary in Raub and her siblings have all found homes. Kapi is fine now and is a loving, happy fun-filled dog. She is a talking dog and its really entertaining when she tells a story.

This is Pavitra Pavlova and she was rescued with her 10 puppies by Mandy Chee's brother-in-law in Northport. She is a beautiful loving dog that will bring much joy to anyone who adopts her. She is also a talking dog like Kapi of Kapar and both spend hours talking to each other daily. Not advisable to adopt them together.

This is Marie - we found her wandering in Klang when she was about 5 months old. She was mangy then but has fully recovered. She is quite serious but gets playful when with other dogs. Good guard dog for homes.

Nana, was rescued scavenging along with her five puppies. Her puppies have also been adopted and she has been vaccinated and spayed. She is a very loving and genteel dog and would make a perfect for an elderly individual or couple. She has little demands other than wanting her head stroked when she places it on your lap.

ADOPTION DRIVE SAT AND SUN

BEAUTIFUL Sheeba was found abandoned in Klang a few months ago by canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB).

MDDB coordinator Christine Lai said the good-natured and playful Spitz-cross dog was depressed when found but has already ‘cheered-up’ and ready for adoption.

“She must have been missing her owners who had dumped her when she was about six months old,’’ said Lai adding the Sheeba was now almost a year old and already neutered.

Sheeba will be among the many dogs and puppies that will be put-up for adoption by MDDB this Saturday and Sunday.

The adoption drive on Saturday will be held between 11.00am to 5.00pm at Kota Alam Shah assemblyman M. Manoharan’s service center in Klang.

The service centre is located at 7A, Persiaran Raja Muda Musa and is between the Klang traffic police contingent headquarters and Hin Hua High School.

MDDB’s adoption drive on Sunday will be held at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya.

The event will be held from 10.00am to 6.00 pm at Block NB1, facing Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee.

“We have many puppies and dogs that are looking for homes and we can only take in more rescues after these have been rehomed,’’ said Lai adding that she hoped more people will come forward to adopt older dogs.

She said the older dogs have been neutered.

Meanwhile, Manoharan said he is backing MDDB’s call for the Selangor state government to give the Trap-Neuter-Release-Manage (TNRM) system a try.

“There’s no harm in trying given that the current method of catching and euthanizing strays appears not to be working out well,’’ said Manoharan.

He said this was evident in the big increase of strays not only in Klang but elsewhere as well.

According to Manoharan when an old method begins to lack efficacy, the right thing to do would be to try new methods.

“The state government and the local councils in Selangor should seriously give TNRM a try,’’ he said.

Under the TNRM method strays would be caught, sterilised and released back to where they came from.

This would drastically decrease the number of strays as the dogs would not be able to reproduce anymore.

MDDB is also in need of necessities like dog, puppy, cat and kitten dry and canned food, rice, dog and cat shampoo, bleach, soap and old newspapers.

Those wanting to donate these items can drop them off at the adoption drive.

MDDB’s merchandise will also be made available at the Jaya One event.

ADOPTION DRIVE FEB 12

JUSTICE
CANINE Welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) is urgently looking for a foster home for disabled young dog Justice.

MDDB coordinator Christina Lai said Justice is being cared for by a temporary fosterer who was able to care for him only until early March.

“Given this Justice needs a place to stay and someone to care for him until June when his original rescuer will take him back,’’ said Lai.

According to Lai, Justice was rescued by a Good Samaritan in Kuantan after he was bashed-up and left to die in a construction site.

The rescuer then asked MDDB’s help to get Justice veterinary care and help as the then puppy’s spinal column had completely transacted.

After having undergone a major surgery to his spinal column, Justice is currently on the road to recovery and needs temporary care.

“He needs is undergoing physiotherapy and is on medication to help regenerate the damaged nerves on his back,’’ said Lai.

She said that Justice is yet to gain full control of his bowels and has to wear a diaper.

However, he has a home-made wheelchair to move around.

“We hope someone will give this plucky young dog a home until he is ready to go back to Kuantan,’’ said Lai.

ENOKI
Meanwhile, MDDB will also have its monthly adoption drive at the Summit Shopping Complex in Subang Jaya this Sunday.

The event which will be held at the main entrance of the premise from 10.00am to 6.00pm will showcase many puppies and dogs that are in need of homes.

One of the puppies in need of a home is Enoki that was rescued soon after birth several months ago.

“There were five puppies and the mother was missing. The person who rescued the puppies highlighted their plight in our Facebook page and a fosterer took them in and cared for them,” said Lai.

All the other four had been adopted except Enoki, said Lai adding that the puppy would be at the adoption drive.

Lai also said MDDB was in urgent need of rice, puppy and dog food, cat and kitten food, shampoo, bleach, soap as well as old newspapers and towels.

Those wanting to donate these items can do so at the adoption venue.

Slash victim

This dog was found wandering with a massive slash wound on its back. Apparently according to people in the area the dog was slashed by some drunks loitering there. Once at the vet, it was discovered that the dog also suffered from some kind of an infection in either its womb or ovaries as there was blood and puss coming from its vagina. Sadly, there was a male dog with this female but was too fierce to be handled. So, he had to be left behind. According to the vet the slash wound, which was badly infected as well, was several days old. We will be transfering the dog to one of our panel clinics for treatment and hopefully the dog will survive through this nightmare. It is also very weak and traumatised. It is very disturbing that there are people who find it so easy to harm animals are there amidst us. We also attribute this to the mentality acquired due the the way dogs are treated here by the authorities. When low life and morons see how the local authorities treat dogs like rodents - they feel that it is acceptable for the to kill these wonderful creatures they perceive as pests. Damn all of them including those who want dogs to be placed in pounds as opposed to TNRM. Sponsorship urgently needed for this poor dog.

New accident victim

Someone called us to say that he had spotted a dog that was lying still without moving at a residential estate near Subang Airport. We asked for his help to send the dog to the vet and the diagnosis is that both the dogs front paws are fractured. One of the affected limb has severe nerve damage and will have to probably be amputated once the dog has recuperated. We hope that some kind soul will come forward to adopt the young dog once its veterinary issues have been settled. We are urgently looking for sponsorship and fostering for this unfortunate dog. Please write to malaysiandogsdeservebetter1@gmail.com for further details.

Rescued Shin Tzu with bad tail injury

Amputated and castrated.

This Shih Tzu was rescued by Zainab and it had a severe injury to the tail. We arranged for the dog's admission at our panel clinic and the vets decided to amputate the tail. He has also been castrated and will be put up for adoption at our next adoption drive. The cost incurred for surgery, castration and amputation is slightly less than RM1,000. We are seeking urgent sponsorship to settle the bill as the dog has been removed today and sent for fostering. Details please write to malaysiandogsdeservebetter1@gmail.com.

Koncked out after surgery.

Dog with bad fracture

Mei Yee told us about a dog she wanted to rescue which had suffered a severe fracture. We told her to do the necessary and that we would raise the funds for the dog's veterinary care. The dog Mocha has undergone surgery and is on the road to recovery - the total cost has come up to about RM2,500. We would be grateful for sponsorship of this dog. We would also like to thank Mei Yee who from the first day had taken the initiative to do as much as possible whenever she had spotted a dog in need of help. Otherwise, we would be grappling and struggling with this dog together with the rest of our rescues as when they come - they come in a big group.
